What will customs charge?

Product, destination, shipment value — get the MFN tariff rate, estimated duty, and import VAT before you shake hands at the booth. Baseline numbers from the same data trade economists use.

Estimator

No federal import VAT — state sales/use tax applies after import, not at the border.

Estimates only — applied rates at national 8–10-digit lines, FTA origin rules, and additional duties can change the outcome. Tariff data: World Bank WITS / UNCTAD TRAINS.

Common questions

Where do the tariff rates come from?▼

World Bank WITS, publishing UNCTAD TRAINS — the applied MFN (most-favored-nation) tariff each market reports at the 6-digit HS level. That's the general rate for goods from WTO members without a trade agreement. Rates are the latest year each market has reported, shown next to the result.

Why can the real duty differ?▼

Three big reasons. Free-trade agreements can cut the rate to zero if your origin qualifies. National tariff lines go deeper than 6 digits, and sub-lines can differ. And trade-remedy duties — like US Section 301 tariffs on Chinese goods or anti-dumping duties — sit on top of the MFN rate and are not included here. Treat this as the baseline, then confirm with your broker.

What value is duty charged on?▼

Most markets assess duty on the CIF value — goods plus international freight and insurance. The US is the main exception, using FOB (goods only). Import VAT is then typically charged on the duty-inclusive total, which is how this estimator calculates it.

How does this connect to the other tools?▼

Find your code with the HS Code Finder, estimate border cost here, then run the full picture — unit economics, freight, margin — in the Landed Cost calculator before you commit at the booth.
