First-timer's guide · Sep 15–20, 2026 · Hannover

Working IAA Transportation 2026 for the first time.

1,700 exhibitors, 145,000 attendees, and a rhythm you only learn by working it. Here's what matters — for the booth side and the buying side — plus the Hannover logistics nobody puts in the brochure.

New exhibitor tips

01

Monday is press only — plan the announcement

The grounds open on 14 September exclusively to accredited press, from 08:00, with press conferences in the Convention Center and at stands. Trade days start the 15th. If you have a vehicle or product launch, Monday is the day it gets covered; miss it and you are announcing into a busy floor.

02

Six days is a marathon, not a show

IAA Transportation runs 15–20 September, 09:00–18:00 daily and 09:00–16:00 on the Sunday. No stand team survives that on one rota — plan three shifts and hand over captured leads at the end of each, not at the end of the week.

03

Hannover halls reward early logistics

The Messegelände is one of the largest fairgrounds in the world and the A37 Messe-Schnellweg feeds it from every direction. Build slots, forklift access and delivery windows get tight; the exhibitor FAQ is the document that saves the money here.

04

Your buyers are fleet and logistics decision-makers

This is commercial vehicles, logistics and transport infrastructure — the visitor is buying fleets, systems and service contracts, not consumer products. Bring TCO figures, service-network coverage and financing options, not a spec sheet.

New visitor tips

01

No invitation letters — and you need a multi-day ticket

Since 2013 German visa applications for fair attendance do not require an organiser invitation, so IAA no longer issues them. What you do normally need is a season ticket (Dauereintrittskarte), not a day ticket, as proof for a business visa application.

02

Check Schengen requirements at your own consulate

Conditions change; the organiser points visitors to the German embassy or consulate handling their application, the Auswärtiges Amt country list, and AUMA (the German trade fair association) for current guidance. Start early — September is peak season for German fairs.

03

Sunday closes two hours early

The final day runs 09:00–16:00 instead of 18:00. If you are flying out Sunday evening, you get a half day, not a full one.

04

The Messe-Schnellweg is the whole trick

Whichever direction you drive from — A2 from Dortmund or Berlin, A7 from Hamburg or Munich — the route ends on the A37/B6 Messe-Schnellweg straight into the grounds. Rail to Hannover Hbf then S-Bahn to Messe/Laatzen is faster during peak hours.

05

Book accommodation the moment you commit

Hannover has far fewer beds than the fair has visitors — this is the city where private-room letting was invented for trade fairs. Six days of show means six nights of the year's highest rates.

How the days flow

  • —Monday: press day — accredited media only, press conferences at the Convention Center and on stands.
  • —Tuesday to Thursday: the core trade days; fleet buyers, OEM delegations and the deepest technical conversations.
  • —Friday to Sunday: the floor broadens and slows. Good for unhurried supplier meetings and competitor walks, with a short Sunday close at 16:00.

Hannover logistics

Getting there

Messegelände Hannover. By car, every autobahn approach funnels onto the A37/B6 Messe-Schnellweg. By train, Hannover Hbf then S-Bahn to Messe/Laatzen. Hannover Airport connects to the grounds by S-Bahn with one change.

Opening hours

14 September press only, 08:00–18:00. 15–19 September 09:00–18:00. 20 September 09:00–16:00.

Where to stay

The official accommodation service covers mid-range to luxury in Hannover, but the city sells out. Braunschweig, Hildesheim and Celle are within commuting distance by train and routinely cheaper.

The tip every guide agrees on

Capture at the booth. Never "the stack for later."
